Description
The main focus is on improving players’ decision-making – when to shoot, pass, or drive the ball. The coach emphasizes the importance of making these “0.5 second” decisions quickly by having players scan the court and gather information before receiving the ball, rather than just watching the ball.
The coach walks through various drills and game-like situations to put players in these decision-making scenarios. He starts simple with 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 drills, then builds up to 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 to increase the complexity. Key points include:
- Having players look at the whole court, not just the ball, to read the defense and make quicker decisions
- Incorporating rules like “drive on pass, pass on drive” to force different decisions
- Using concepts like ball screens, cutters, and spacing to create more options for the offense
- Emphasizing the importance of making the right read, not just executing the skill
The overall goal is to get players comfortable making quick decisions in game-like situations, rather than just running set plays.
The coach wants to develop their basketball IQ and decision-making abilities.
